Mexico Not Accepting US Dollars

More here.

Re: Mexico Not Accepting US Dollars

My brother lives there 5 months of the year (PV) and I spoke with him about it a minute ago. He's had no problems using USD and exchanging USD/MXN.

Re: Mexico Not Accepting US Dollars

Thanx - I'd like to live around Baja someday - it may be limited to one region - but the more I looked and thought about the sources and the complainers - the more they looked like wild eyed trouble making dominion heretics  - maybe it's the "old get of town before sundown" shtick.

Imagination is more important than knowledge.

Re: Mexico Not Accepting US Dollars

Just avoid the US-Mexican border and you will be fine! lol

Re: Mexico Not Accepting US Dollars

I agree, i live in the baja malibu lomas (between TJ and Rosarito)area.

I tried to get the banks to swap some US to Pesos because I needed to pay the electricity, which can only be paid in peso's, about a weekend ago and they wouldn't do it.

They still have money changers, it usually says "Cambio" or something like that all over had to resort to that.  All the merchants have always taken my dollars so I think it is just a bank thing, may even be just that specific bank.

As far as living there it took me awhile to begin to understand a third world country and was anxious alot.  After two years there the only thing that bothers us now is the traffic going into Mexico was very fast, now this last year they are trying to secure their enrty and am afraid that it will get worse.  I have a sentri pass to get into the US so that is quick 10-15 mins max.  Going into Mexico has just not been predictable time wise for the last year.

If you stay on the tourist roads and pay the toll it's almost a straight shot to my place.

Just stay out of TJ and La Playas TJ at night.  We stay out of TJ completely now and only La Playas TJ of occassion.

I have a 3 bed 3 bath two huge decks off that bedroom facing the ocean and islands, probably six time as big as the apartment in Cali for the same price.  You can hear the waves breaking especially at night, incredible.

Things are looking better down there as far as infrastructure over the last six months.  They are putting a lot of money into the roads etc...

So - I'm guessing the digital infrastructure is refined enough for you to connect to Fattail?

Hows the electricity? Water supply? Is A/C required? Good food at the markets?

Is the ocean the Pacific or the Gulf of California? What's the ambient temperature at midnight?

At night is the sky clear and dark? Can you see stars all the way to the horizon?

Is your lease secure - can you own property?

Is it a sandbar break - or coral / rocky bottom?

How often do you come back to the states?

Is your productivity better than it is/was state side?

Have you established friendships with the local gentry?

How did you manage to score that lifestyle?

I have two 3g data modems that i lease from Telcel, 750kb to 1.5mbits that way i can work from a restaurant etc... you can also get a hard line from the phone company.  Not sure how good that is.

I use the data modems with a special wifi router that works with a USB plugin.

Electricity is on most of the time but have 4 laptops with batteries and direct connect to the data cards to close things out or hedge if needed.

Water, don't drink it.  they have bottled water trucks that run around with water to drink.  I use faucet for everything that is not going in my mouth.

first place that i have lived where i didn't need AC

the markets leave me wanting in that hygiene, refrigeration, open containers, meat and fish uncovered etc...

doesn't mean it's not good, just not sure my system is up to it wink

I'm a loner and you have to be careful who you hook up with here, you never know what they are up to, i could tell you some stories ha ha

Pacific side facing Coronado Islands, most of the year it is clear and can see stars.  I'm told that it is best of all places in the world regarding weather.

Google "baja malibu surfing"  great place to surf but i think the water has become somewhat dangerous do to infrastructure
issues with waste water.

lease is secure, first year was locked now on month to month as long as I like

I live in san diego so with sentri pass is quick to get back and forth across the border

Also thought i would add that walmart, mcdonalds, burger king etc... are in Rosarito now so you won't feel too far from home

hope that helps

Re: Mexico Not Accepting US Dollars

Hi Cadavre,

Where do you live right now, also need you to know that i have a wife that comes down on the weekends to clean the place and relax. (you would have to pass her test LOL)  Wife is 18 years my senior so you have to behave when she is here wink

Are you familiar with fxspyder or other auto trading platforms or Oanda's API?  I have a strategy but i need an auto hedge so i don't have to be available 24/7

Grand kids who are 16 and 17 1/2 come down on occasion also but for the most part the place is only occupied as of late about half the time.

how would you support yourself if not from cali...

Re: Mexico Not Accepting US Dollars

Hi All,

Just thought that I would add on to this in case anyone was still interested.  June 14th they enacted a law in Mexico that prohibits any government agency from accepting USD.  That would include utilities like electric and water also as I found this out when going to pay my water, it was an official posting.  I asked the local Policia and he explained that it was an effort to stop the money laundering and put a curb on the cartel and mob as the money that comes back into Mexico is in USD.

Sorry I took so long to get back with the info.
